Context

In a speculative future

where humans and Tyrannosaurus rex coexist,

biological survival is no longer the greatest challenge.

Communication is.

A system built around speech cannot simply be transferred to a species

that perceives and responds to the world differently.

The project therefore moves beyond the translation of existing words.

It asks whether communication must be rebuilt from more fundamental conditions.

Human language is inseparable from human anatomy, behaviour, and cognition.

The investigation connects

semiotics,

behavioural communication,

palaeontology,

experimental typography,

speculative design,

and interaction design.

Investigation

Rather than beginning with a visual alphabet, the research begins with need:

This shifts attention from how a language should look to what makes an exchange possible in the first place.

What information must pass between two species,

and which behaviours could carry it?

Typography became the visible consequence of a broader communication logic—not the starting point.

This conceptual shift transformed the project from an exercise in form-making into the construction of a speculative communication framework.

Concept

Development

Designing symbols was not enough. Before a symbol could hold meaning, the project needed to establish shared references, behavioural cues, and rules of use. Typography became the visible consequence of a broader communication logic—not the starting point.

Research the conditions of interspecies exchange.

  1. Define a communication framework and its rules.

  1. Analyse behaviour as a possible carrier of meaning.

  1. Develop symbols from that underlying logic.

  1. Translate the framework into a digital experience.

  1. Test the system through interactive scenarios.

Each element depends on the others.

Vocabulary provides the units of exchange, grammar establishes relationships, rules make those relationships usable, and interaction reveals whether the system can operate as communication rather than remain an abstract code.

The project materialises as a speculative communication framework, an experimental typography system, a behaviour-based symbolic language, motion demonstrations, narrative world-building, and an interactive website.

These are not separate outputs. Together, they show how one communication logic can move across research, visual language, interaction, and experience.

TYRANNO fundamentally changed my understanding of communication design.

The most consequential design decisions happened before typography, before visual form, and even before language itself. The project redirected my attention from designing artefacts to designing the conditions through which communication can emerge.
